SHOWDOWN ON NYE FOR THE SECOND STRAIGHT YEAR
12/31/2009 / Blog / Tim Bulmer

Well not a real shocker, Team USA (3-0) will meet Team Canada (3-0) tonight in what will no doubt be an epic showdown for the second consecutive year. Last year, the Americans led 3-0 before John Tavares brought Team Canada back to life with a hat-trick. Team Canada would eventually defeat Team USA 7-4, in stunning fashion. These long time rivals have had quite the WJC history; in 2007 both clubs met in the Semifinals, that contest went to a seven round shootout with Jonathan Toews scoring three times to give the Canadians a 2-1 (SO) victory. In 2004, Team USA roared back from being down 3-1 to tie it in the third frame. Patrick O'Sullivan recorded the go-ahead goal and the Americans captured their first gold medal.

Fast facts: Both teams have met 34 times since 1977, Canada holds a 26-5-3 advantage. Team USA Captain Derek Stepan has posted 8 points (3+5) through three games. 9 out of 13 USA forwards have scored a goal. Three players for Team Canada have 8 points: A. Pietrangelo (2+6), G. Bourque (3+5), J. Eberle (3+5). Brandon McMillan leads the Canadian effort with 4 goals in three games.

Action begins at 7:30 p.m. on the NHL Network in the states and TSN in Canada.
