Team USA dominated play against Team Finland on Wednesday with a 6-3 victory. With the win, the US moves to 2-0 during the 2010 National Junior Development Camp.
Jeremy Morin started the scoring for the Americans by roofing a wrist shot after receiving a tape-to-tape pass from defenseman Adam Clendening. Less than five minutes later, Nick Bjugstad put the home side up by a pair when he cleaned up Justin Faulk’s rebound. For the second consecutive game, the U.S. squad shut-out their opponent in the first period.
“I think that every time you face a different team, you're going to face different tendencies and different systems,” said Morin. “Finland was a little different than the Sweden game, but we adjusted and did well.”
Despite some undisciplined play from Team USA in the last 40 minutes – including the ejection of Clendening – head coach Keith Allain was pleased with the work of his penalty killing units.
“We haven’t had a lot of time to talk about what we wanted to do with different coverages. We’ve relied on the grit of our guys, and if we had time we’d be even better.”
Clendening (Niagara Falls, NY) was given a five-minute major and game misconduct in the second period for a cross-check to Finland’s Topi Taavitsainen, who appeared to have a bloody mouth as he came off the ice. Clendening is eligible to play in Friday’s game against Sweden, but the final decision will rest with Allain.
USA finished the game with balanced scoring from nine different players. Bjugstad finished with two goals, while defenseman Derek Forbort chipped in two assists. The Americans will have the day off today, before wrapping up development camp with games against Sweden (Friday) and Finland (Saturday).
Game Notes: Only one penalty was called in the third period of yesterday’s game, compared to 14 in Tuesday’s contest against Sweden… The Swedes took Wednesday’s scheduled practice day off to go on a team-building whitewater rafting excursion. They are back in action today at 4 p.m. against Finland. |
