Team USA continued to impress on home soil as the Americans dominated Slovakia in a 6-1 victory at the HSBC Arena on Tuesday night.
Kyle Palmieri led the charge for Team USA, as the Anaheim Ducks prospect scored two goals and notched an assist in the Americans’ victory.
“My line was playing pretty well tonight and we had a little chemistry going,” said Palmieri. “We were fortunate enough to draw penalties using our speed, and we were able to convert on a couple of those power plays, which is good for the team. We carried that momentum throughout the game.”
Charlie Coyle started the American’s scoring, as he found Kyle Palmieri in front of the net to put Team USA up 1-0 early in the first.
A frightening moment occurred midway through the first period, as Slovakian forward Peter Hrasko hit Jerry D’Amigo up high against the boards. Hrasko was assessed a game misconduct for the incident and D’Amigo did return later in the period.
The Americans capitalized on a man-advantage as Palmieri found the back of the net and netted his second goal of the game. Team USA carried their two-goal lead into the second period after outshooting the Slovaks 22-1 in 20 minutes of play.
Team USA showed no signs of slowing down, as Coyle, Chris Brown, Drew Shore, and Emerson Etem each tallied a goal for a commanding 6-1 lead after two. Following Etem’s goal, Slovak goaltender Dominik Riecicky was relieved by Juraj Holly. Riecicky stopped 34 shots before being replaced. Tomas Jurco scored the lone goal for Slovakia in the second period.
“The players didn’t help him today, that’s why he was pulled. The goals he let in were not his fault,” said Slovak coach Stefan Mikes.
Team Slovakia was issued another match penalty for checking to the head and neck area in the third period when Slovak defenseman Martin Marincin blindsided Jason Zucker behind the Slovak net. Marincin also received a game misconduct and Team USA dominated the third period to defeat Slovakia 6-1.
Slovakia drops to 1-1 in the tournament, but have a chance to rebound on Thursday night as they face off against Switzerland (1-1) at the HSBC Arena at 3:00 PM.
Team USA increases to 2-0 in the preliminary rounds of the tournament and look for their third victory against Germany (0-2) on Thursday night. The puck drops at 7:00 PM inside the HSBC Arena. |
