Team Sweden’s momentum continued as they beat Czech Republic for their third straight win with a 6-3 victory.
The two teams exchanged power-play goals throughout the preliminary game as Sweden capitalized on three of seven power play opportunities and Czech Republic capitalized on two of six chances. The game was dictated by special teams and stellar goaltending from Swedish backup Fredrik Wentzel Petersson, who stopped 18 of 21 shots on goal. Sweden won the special teams battle to propel them to victory.
Early in the first period, Team Czech Republic’s forward Michal Hlinka opened the scoring on Sweden’s too many men penalty to take a 1-0 lead. Less than two minutes later, the Czechs were called for a penalty and Sweden’s forward Johan Larsson notched a power play goal at the 5:53 mark to tie the game at one. Czech Republic’s Robin Soudek was assessed a boarding penalty and Sweden’s forward Mark Friberg capitalized on their second power play opportunity.
Jesper Fasth scored Sweden’s third goal for a 3-1 lead heading into the second.
Sweden started the second period firing on all cylinders as they scored two goals less than three minutes apart to take a 5-1 lead. Czech Republic wouldn’t give up without a fight as forward Martin Frk led the team as he scored back-to-back goals, lifting his team within two.
Sweden kept Czech Republic off the board for the rest of the game and Calle Jarnkrok added their sixth goal of the game to clinch an important victory and remain tied with Canada in the Group B standings.
Swedish goaltender Robin Lehner commented on the team’s power play, “Our power play is basically when you get into the offensive zone, you use your imagination to do what you do best, shoot the puck or set up a play.”
Sweden faces off against Canada at 4:00 p.m Friday at HSBC Arena, and the winner will be exempt from the quarterfinals. Team Czech Republic looks to rebound as they face off against Russia at 7:00 P.M Friday at Dwyer Arena.
